  1. Hi Fienix looks amazing is it possible to run this on a Powermac G5? Keep up the good work! :-D

    1. It is possible to boot into Fienix from Open Firmware on a G5, but it's complicated and not yet supported. A G5 boot image will be available "soon".

    2. Sorry, that is in regards to the currently available img file.
Was browsing through the img file as i have no method to install it yet... nor any suitable kernel+initrd
errors=continue would be better for ext4, as opposed to remount-ro, imho

    3. It would be great if the contents of /boot could be included, i did notice there is /lib/modules/(version)/* so with the /boot/* i would be able to test run it in qemu ;P

    4. This information was provided by Christian Zigotzky:
Use the X5000 Linux kernel for booting Fienix in a virtual QEMU machine because our X5000 kernel supports the virtual e5500 QEMU machine too. The X5000 Linux kernel is included in CYRUSBOOT-files.

      QEMU command: "./qemu-system-ppc64 -M ppce500 -cpu e5500 -m 2048 -kernel /path/to/uImage-5.0 -drive format=raw,file=/path/to/Fienix-Beta.img,index=0,if=virtio -nic user,model=e1000 -append "rw root=/dev/vda" -device virtio-vga -device virtio-mouse-pci -device virtio-keyboard-pci -device qemu-xhci,id=newusb -device usb-audio,bus=newusb.0 -smp 4"

    3. QGIS 3.x needs a bit more work but should be available soon.

  6. Hi,
I'd like to install Fienix on a Mac mini G4/1.5, currently running Ubuntu 16.04

    https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac_mini_g4_1.5.html

Is it possible? Are there instructions to do this?
Thank you very much in advance!

    1. Probably; but I'm not sure what the performance will be due to the restricted max RAM. See https://fienixppc-news.blogspot.com/2019/06/stop-gap-install-for-powerpc-macs.html

    2. I've managed to install it on a 1.42 GHz G4 iBook. There were a few hurdles to overcome, specifically with missing package dependencies on mate-system-tools which is no longer available but was moved into another mate specific package (can't recall at the moment exactly what it was). I had to create and build an empty dummy package for mate-system-tools to get past this issue. However, I'm now fully running Fienix on it and I'm definitely impressed so far with the results. It's made using this old iBook fun and useful again. I'd be happy to help anyone else who wants to run Fienix on a G4 system.

    3. You're the first I've heard from who installed Fienix on a G4! Great news! Would you be able to send me a screenshot with System Monitor showing the System tab? I'd love to see it in action! ppcutopia.caseyac@gmail.com

  9. Would it be possible to make an alternate boot image for AMCC440 or AMCC460 PowerPC processors as well?
or are these CPU options not powerful enough to run a minimal modern linux distribution?

    1. Such as those used in the A-Cube Sam systems? Fienix should run alright on Sam460 and probably on Sam440, though it may be a bit sluggish. I do not have one of these systems to test. Let me know if you have one and if you have any experience installing any other Linux based distributions, if you're willing to test.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I am specifically using an ACube sam440flex (I actually have a USB3 controller installed but missing drivers :-/ along with an external USB3 SATA RAID box that acts like a 2 disk controller on the current settings )

I'd be willing to test if I can boot from a USB stick with a Linux image.

I'm currently working on a couple of other things and primarily need BTRfs and ReiserFS access (for PPC and x86 system contents) so that I can re-arrange a whole lot of data.

  14. Hi,
I don't have enough "karma" to create a Fienix subreddit but it could be a good thing for troubleshooting.
I am running a G5 iMac and currently trying to install Fienix following the instuctions. Sadly yaboot says it can't : "Uknown or corrupted filesystem".

    2. Does your iMac have the Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) or iSight? Unfortunately the OpenFirmware commands will not work on models prior to those with ALS. Also to image the disk from Windows I recommend "USB Image Tool".

    3. Yes I have the original 2004 iMac G5. I managed to install Lubuntu with this command. Is there no way I can install Fienix ?

  17. You're the only one left supporting PowerPC Linux. How can we support your work. I'd be willing to send cash. Probably a small amount but maybe other people would too.

    1. Thank you for your interest! I may start a donation mechanism at some point to help cover repository hosting costs. It would also be pretty great to get a few more PowerPC systems to test on.

Besides donating, you can help by using Fienix and testing the apps in the Fienix repository. If you come across bugs, report them, especially if you can find a solution or workaround. Fienix has a rudimentary bug reporting forum on the website.

Also, if you know how, or care to learn, try to build new programs from source. If you’re successful, share it here. If you’re not successful, put a bug report in with the developer (make sure you understand how to submit a bug report and what information to include first). You may be surprised how accommodating the developer may be. Regardless, bug reports help put the word out there that people are using PowerPC systems, and PowerPC systems are still in production.

Debian and OpenSuse have community supported PowerPC builds, and Fedora 28 is supported in "maintenance mode".

    1. Power 9 is supported. I do not have the hardware to develop system-specific media or instructions, but Raptor Computing Systems have informed me that BE mode is supported, and I know of Blackbird owners who run Fienix system.

  21. Just checking to see if any progress has been made toward a bootable version of Fienix for the G5? REALLY want to try this out on my machine. Willing to donate. Also keep up the great work!

  22. please share an .iso of fienix to burn on a double-layer DVD.
the installation process would not start with
"boot ud:2,\\yaboot" once debian is already installed on a particular mac (in my case a pm7,3), instead of starting with the fienix installer it would start into yaboot and ask for l:linux c:macos(x) c:cd.
