  2. Hello Casey,
Thanks for your answer, i appreciate. I finally succed to install on my iMac G5 PowerPc but it's too slow. I think that i have a 32bits kernel, not a 64. So i'm frustrated to be unavailable to use your great job. So, i'm using ubuntu. Please, do not hesitate, if you can, to update for a32bits version...Please... :)
    Despite : CONGRATS

    1. Fienix does not use a 32-bit kernel. Maybe your USB disk is too slow.

  3. Hi, I'm trying to install Fienix on G5 Powerpc 7,2 but the screen go black soon when starts installation process, and no way to switch to console with ctr+alt+F1.
The G5 ships with Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 Ultra, that I know have problem with driver: there's a way to go on?

  4. First of all thanks for Fienix-Installer_5.1.iso.
I was able to easily install Powerpc G5 7.3 on my machine with 9600 ati graphics card with the following code.
    boot ud:2,\\yaboot
    It has some issues.
1-It was not connected to the internet with an Ethernet cable. I couldn't see anything in the settings.
2- There is no other setting other than resolution 1024*768. I couldn't add custom resolution. There is a Monitor: Unknown error. My monitor: LG Lcd.
Note: Debian 11 iso, these were auto-tuning.
3- Speaker did not output sound.
Iso update or some help. Thanks.

    1. Glad you were able to install.
For the network issue: Open a terminal window with Ctrl+Shift+t. Enter "su -" and the root password when prompted. Enter "dhclient". Exit. Your network should work from now on.
For the display issue: Try following these instructions: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guide_to_X11/Define_new_resolution
For the sound issue: Try adding "snd-aoa-i2sbus" to the file /etc/modules

  5. I also had problems with the installer recognizing the ethernet card. This is not a problem with my USB installation of Firm is. I've not had a chance to check whether the soundcard was detected.

  6. Hi there...
Well, Fienix installed very nicely on my G5 Dual 1.8 using the new DVD installer... and boots to the graphic UI.
Unfortunately I'm unable to connect to internet.
First let me say that this dual boot G5 connects without issue when running Leopard, but on booting up Fienix, no go.
I've tried going to terminal (su) and entering dhclient, but this doesn't result in a connection.
Browser launch is met by "server not found."
Network proxy is set to direct internet connection.
Tried to gain some insight via Fienix companion, but it errors out (perhaps for the above reasons).
Any assist you may provide in helping me to connect would be deeply appreciated!

    1. "su -" then the root password, then "dhclient". su space hyphen enter, then root password, then dhclient. "su" without a hyphen was never the appropriate way to gain root privileges, whether it "worked" or not.

  7. Ibook G4 1.42mhz trying to install from CD image. I get Cannot resolve "Setting up the Package Manager" in the DEB install process. Do I just skip by it and get back to it later? and can anyone help with that?

    1. OK, so that issue is passed as I guess I cannot install on an external drive. did the full install, it now boots to an attempted graphic UI screen.. only displays a corrupted 1/2 of the screen and then goes black.

    2. When you first boot the system up you will briefly see a yaboot prompt. When this displays please try to enter (without quotes): "Linux radeon.agpmode=-1 radeon.modeset=1 video=offb:off"

  8. My install fails at "Load Installer Components from CD". The progress bar reaches 16%, then stops and displays "There was a problem reading data from the CD-ROM. Please make sure it is in the drive. If retrying does not work, you should check the integrity of your CD-ROM. Failed to copy file from CD-ROM. Retry?" Retrying fails each time with the same message above.
I burned the installer, in Linux Mint, using Brasero to two different DVDs at different speeds with the same exact result (failed). Is the PowerMac G5 picky about the type of DVD it can read? I used Memorex DVD-RW.
My unit: PowerMac G5 (PowerMac 7,3), processor: PowerPC G5 (2.2), installer DVD with Fienix 5.1. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    1. You'll likely have more luck using a DVD-R or DVD+R using the slowest burn speed.

  10. I made a live USB to install the OS on my PowerBook G4 1.5/512/80 and it installed successfully without any error messages. However, after it does the boot cycle, it'll go to a black screen without a cursor. The GPU is a GeForce Go5200. Do I need more RAM or is this a bug?

    1. I tried the nomodeset and video=off:off nouveau.modeset=0 and nothing either.

    2. Not sure if it's a typo or not, but the command should be "video=offb:off", not "video=off:off".
I don't have a definitive answer for you as I don't have this system to test, but please try the below yaboot boot parameters. I'd appreciate if you let me know if any of these work.
      "Linux video=TV-1:d video=offb:off"
      "Linux nouveau.modeset=1 video=TV-1:d video=offb:off"
      "Linux nouveau.modeset=1 video=TV-1:d video=offb:off video=nouveaufb:off"
      "Linux nouveau.modeset=1 video=offb:off video=nouveaufb:off"
      "Linux nouveau.modeset=0 video=nouveaufb:1024x768-24"
      "Linux nouveau.modeset=0 video=nouveaufb:1024x768-16"

    3. Hello,
I've the same problem and I tried the suggested boot parameters with no success. However the system seems to be working and I tried to access with ssh fro another computer in my Lan in order to see system logs, but the connection is refused by default. It could be feasible to enable ssh server by default on Fienix?

    Load ramdisk ...
    malloc failed
/ht0 ... (hard disk parameters) ..., /boot/initrd.img: Unknown or corrupt filesystem.
After that, the Open Firmware console appears.
I appreciate any help and thanks for the great work!

    1. I fix it. The problem was the hard disk. I put another and I have Fienix run in my powerpc G5. I tested some applications and run well. But the sound did not work. Looking here and other forums I following some solutions, ex. I put some lines in the /etc/modules, but not work. Some ideas? Thanks!

    2. You shouldn't need to add lines to /etc/modules anymore. Did you make sure volume is turned up? After the install the volume will be turned all the way down.

    3. Hi caseyac, thanks for to replay. I checked the volume options and installed the extra software from Fienix source, but the sound did not work. The system shows that the sound is out. I tried with various speakers and with the front plug-in. The sound card work, the typical sound from mac when turn on is output for external speakers. Some ideas? Thanks a lot!

  12. Hi there, thank you for your great work!
I think this is a new one... PowerBook G4 1Ghz 17" (Al) 2Gb RAM. Booting Fienix 6.0.1 from a DVD-R, no problem. Reaches the installer, I choose my language/keyboard etc. But when it enters the HW detection phase, progress bar shows for a split second then display goes 100% dark - as in, backlight switches off. System looks responsive enough to make DVD noises if I blindly tap keys. If I try any of the boot parameters on the OF troubleshooting guide, Fienix gets stuck at the screen with the kernel msgs before the modeswitch. What could it be?
I'll try with and external monitor tomorrow (need to obtain a DVI>HDMI adapter). Also I don't think its my PB as I had VoidPPC working fine these last days. FWIW my PRAM battery is bust so the laptop doesn't keep time betwen reboots, for this I usually setup chronyd for NTP sync on boot. I don't think its a factor but I mention it anyway...

  13. Hi there! Thanks so very much for your remarkable work... My install on a G5 is working great!!
No problems at all... just basic questions with regard to the Fienix firewall setup.
I see that nftables are installed and I'm wondering whether these are active on install or instead require "systemctl enable and start" commands for activation of the firewall post install. I'm guessing (and hopeful) that no further configuration is required (but if so, what would be required). Finally what would the expected rules state for input, forward and output on the /etc/nftables.conf file?
    Again, thank you!!

  15. I have tried burning Fienix 6.0.1 to both DVD+R and DVD-R at the slowest speed (1x) multiple times with ImgBurn on Windows 10. Each time the program reports disc errors after burning, and my PowerPC G5 7.3 doesn't recognize the discs as bootable (my Fienix 5.1 discs are still bootable, however, they all show an MD5 checksum verification failure during installation). I have also tried burning DVDs with Brasero in Linux, same result. Should I be using a specific brand of DVD+R or DVD-R? Or a specific burning program? Can't figure out what I'm missing here. Thank you for any help.

    2. Make sure you're downloading the Open Firmware installer. I've used Memorex, PlexDisc and Winvalue DVD-R with no issues. I've heard that using DVD+R may have issues and I know DVD-RW will not work. I typically use Brasero.

    1. Have you tried seeing if Mac OS X or ddrescue identifies the drive? Did you check your cables? There's no reason the installer wouldn't recognize a working drive.

  20. Yes. OSX installs fine on this drive. In fact I had it installed before wiping the drive and attempting to install Fienix. TBH this G5 powermac is a bit strange and I have had trouble installing any Linux distribution on it. It's a sort of a transition model between the 2003 and 2004 model, with a weird version of OF on it that does not conform 100% to what one would expect - especially the device tree it presents in the OF console is unusual. I tried many distributions in the past on it, Adelie, Debian, etc - none worked. The only time I was partially successful was with an old (5-6 years ago) version of Gentoo, it partially installed and then refused to continue. Recent versions of Gentoo don't even do that, can't boot from the installer image. OSX has no trouble seeing the drive and installing.

    1. I haven't encountered this issue before. You could try installing Mac OS X on the drive again so it has a partition table and see if Fienix installer recognizes it then. The installer can delete partitions and re-partition the drive, so there's no need to wipe it first. Otherwise you have another drive you could try it.

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the installer recognize/use any drive attached to this G5. I tested many drives, both mechanical and SSD, neither is recognized properly, whether it is blank or has a partition table. Here is an example of what I see in dmesg, and this is the case for all the drives I tried. The particular drive used in this case had a MBR partition table with an ext4 partition. https://i.postimg.cc/J7f5rH2Q/IMG-20241027-090851.jpg

  21. The installer ran alright on my Power Mac G5. And I get all of the usual startup messages as things are brought online. But I get a garbled image (black/white & purple/green columns) instead of login screen when booting from the hard drive. I tried all of the options in the troubleshooting section without success. At some point in the startup messages, the screen flashes and then the text (and the garbled screen that follows) don't take up the whole screen; the top 20% is blank.
